The John Barker Centre

The John Barker Centre aims to support the social, emotional, behavioural and academic needs of students who have either been permanently excluded from mainstream schools or are at risk of exclusion in the London Borough of Redbridge. The centre aims to empower young people to gain the skills they need to participate in mainstream life more successfully. For some this will be achieved by returning to their mainstream school, or a new school. For others it may mean moving on to the New Rush Hall Key Stage 4 provision for students who are not educated at school, to complete GCSEs. The Pupil Support Centre intends to provide as much preventative support for students and schools in Redbridge as possible. This needs students to attend for a time limited placement and referring schools to support the ethos of reintegrating students who have been permanently excluded.

Our team
The centre has 3.8 teachers, 2 learning support assistants and a full time administration officer.

Our building
We have three multi-purpose teaching areas, one of which is our 'group room'. This is a base for students at breakfast club, break and lunch times and is also where our social skills groups are held. Our outdoor recreation area is very small, but we aim to compensate for this by making a range of facilities for students to use during their unstructured time (outdoor table tennis, pool, computers, selection of games).
